Widening Participation

Ethnicity and disability in the context of widening participation

Ethnicity is not just about cultural differences but also, for example, about how religion influences participation. Single sex accommodation, access to prayer rooms at appropriate times, ability to take Friday off, attitudes to alcohol in induction events can all influence participation in both academic and social activities, in turn affecting aspects of higher education such as retention and achievement.

Increasing participation by disabled students should be covered through the normal processes to facilitate access by disabled students. Members of staff should be aware of these and how to put students in touch with the appropriate university support staff. The Disability and Accessible Curricula section of the Centre website looks at widening access to the curricula and other activities for disabled students. There is also a section on employability which brings together information on both careers and work placements.
