Assessment

The UK Centre for Bioscience supports assessment through publications, events and funding.

Publications and Resources

The Assessment Briefing brings together references and resources on assessment in the biosciences. The briefing is divided into 12 sections on different topics within the theme of assessment, e.g. assessing problem based learning and formative and summative assessment.

The briefing can be downloaded in full in pdf format or you can request a paper copy from the Centre.

Visit the Assessment Briefing webpage to find out more about the briefing and further assessment resources to accompany those in the briefing.

Self- and Peer- Assessment: Guidance on Practice in the Biosciences, by Paul Orsmond. The first in a series of guides intended to be an accessible introduction to good learning and teaching practice within the context of competing research and institutional pressures. The aim of each publication is to provide a persuasive overview of the pedagogic reasons for adopting a particular practice and support these reasons with sufficient practical guidance and information to turn ideas into reality.

Student Short Guide on Assessment - advice and guidance for students on various aspects of assessment, from thinking about assessment criteria and what assessment might be of, to who could be assessing their work and avoiding plagiarism.

The Assessment Short Guide can be downloaded in pdf format from our Student Short Guides webpage, we also have a limited number of paper copies available - please contact the Centre to request copies.

Our Bioscience Student Webpages bring together a variety of resources for students, some are assessment focused and there are a number of resources focused on, for example, designing posters, writing essays and giving presentations.
