Outcomes from a workshop on 1st year undergraduate practicals

In April 2008 the Centre for Bioscience (with financial support from AstraZeneca and the BBSRC) arranged a workshop involving 32 bioscience staff from across UK HE, to discuss the topic of first year undergraduate work in the biosciences. Participants shared experiences of delivering practical classes where problem solving, research investigation, creativity and innovation are key features, before redesigning a number of current practicals in an investigative mode and in light of the needs expressed by students in our survey (download results), which were reported by Collis et al., (2008).

Report from the workshop

1st year practicals: their role in developing future bioscientists
This report contains a summary of the main points, a list of recommendations, and a number of practicals, from the workshop.

In the coming months the Centre will be working with individuals and organisations to take forward a number of the recommendations from the report. Copies of the report are available (free of charge) by contacting the Centre or you can download a copy of the report.

If you are involved in practical teaching and have experience to share or may be interested in working with us in this area, we would be delighted to hear from you.
