Just in Time Teaching: can it deliver improvement in undergraduate communication skills?
DescriptionJust in Time Teaching (JiTT) is a student-centred pedagogic strategy to develop active learning class environments where the content is responsive to baseline information about the student's prior knowledge and understanding. Students are asked to prepare in advance for a contact session with a tutor by undertaking a warm-up exercise, usually web-based, with feedback to the tutor before the session. The feedback is then used to enable the tutor to pitch the contact session appropriately to accommodate the range of knowledge and understanding of the topic within the student group. Evidence from the USA within the sciences shows the method to have a wide rage of positive outcomes for individual student learning and motivation. This project aimed to establish whether the method can be used to support final year project students by developing resources and piloting the use of the method to deliver sessions on scientific writing.
