The use of video podfiles to support practical laboratory classes
DescriptionPodcasts are a poorly understood communication medium yet it is increasing its prominence in modern culture as large communication organisations, such as the BBC and other media giants, employ podcasts to broadcast its products. At its simplest, a podcast is an audio or video file which is made available to groups of people who ‘subscribe’ to it and therefore receive regular updates. There are some elements of podcasts that can be employed for education purposes and a few academics use podcasts in support of their lecture teaching. The use of podcasts, to the best of our knowledge, has never been used in the practical laboratory context. We feel it could make a significant contribution in the support of practicals where procedural steps are required. Such laboratory podcasts would allow students to work at their own pace, be less distracted and less reliant on demonstrators. It would be particularly useful for dyslexic students and international students whose first language is not English. This project will explore the use of podcasts initially in selected Human Physiology practicals and evaluate its effectiveness. Outcomes and downloads
