Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning

The Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning (FDTL) was provided by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL). The Fund was established in 1995 to support projects aimed at stimulating developments in teaching and learning in higher education and to encourage the dissemination of good teaching and learning practice across the higher education sector. The final phase of FDTL projects has now started and there is currently no funding available for new projects. More information about the FDTl initiative is available from the Academy website.

Student Transition and Retention

There is widespread evidence and agreement that, the transfer from schools, FE Institutions or other HE Institutions into university, even internally between courses, can be a difficult time for students. Therefore in these transition periods there needs to be adequate support for these students and additional support for those most affected by the change in their academic and social lives.

Real World

Integrating Work-related Learning into the Curriculum

This initiative aims to enhance the employability of students within the disciplines of Agriculture, Environment, Forestry and Organismal Bioscience through the integration of work-related learning activities into the curriculum. They have collected case studies and published several publications.

LAPT

London Agreed Protocol for Teaching uses Certainty-Based Marking in the presentation of teaching material.

The aim is to reward students for reliable confidence judgements about their answers to questions. This assists reflective study and formative assessment and (in a recent trial) has been shown to improve the reliability of summative assessment (with potential savings in exam effort).

In touch, Online

Supporting placement learning through a virtual learning environment

We will be developing a web-based interface using the Blackboard Managed Learning Environment (MLE), to provide appropriate support at all stages of the placement process; through seeking and obtaining placements, maintaining contact during the placement year itself, and in collation and preparation of assessment materials for City & Guilds qualifications.

SPRInTA

Student Portal Resources for Innovative Targeted Assessment

Over a two year period the project team developed a range of online self-assessments and tutorial guidance for Sports Science students.
