VIRTUBeS2: Video Representations of Tutorials for Bioscience Supervisors and Students
DescriptionThis project set out to examine the creation, sharing and critiquing of digital video clips, captured from tutor and research student supervisory sessions among biosciences tutors and their PhD students. The rational for looking at research supervision came from concerns about the lack of systematic preparation for supervision, where expertise is mostly developed from the supervisor's own experience, and through practice. It is also normally a very private practice between tutor and student and not open to inspection. The clips were to be made available as respresentations of aspects of the practice of bioscience research supervision. The clips were to be made accessible in a distributed networked learning environment, which could be used in:
The research aimed to analyse the uses made and user perceptions of multimedia representation of bioscience research supervisors and students. VIRTuBeS2 also aimed to gather empirical evidence on science research supervision practices which could be used to inform current debates on ways of improving research student support and student completion rates across the range of disciplines and subjects in the HE sector. Staff from bioscience departments in 3 UK universities had agreed (in principle) to participate in the recordings, unfortunately in practice this did not occur. Instead exemplar clips were produced with the support of the local Educational Research department and examples from one specific supervision session have been elaborated and can be accessed below. A summary of experience from the project and lessons learned are summarised in the project report. Outcomes and downloads
