Virtual Education Resource for the Biosciences

Resources for teaching Evolutionary History

Helen Chatterjee - University College London

VERB is an online teaching and learning resource designed to accompany and enhance undergraduate degrees in the Biosciences, focused around UCL's extensive zoological collections. VERB contains a series of web books and associated quizzes outlining the diversity of the animal kingdom from an evolutionary perspective, plus an associated glossary with hyperlinked entries.

The topics of focus are phylogeny (evolutionary history) and functional anatomy, but subjects as wide as genetics, ecology, physiology, development, and cell biology are discussed where relevant.

If you have any feedback regarding these resources, please let us know using the Comments form at the bottom of the page.

A collection of images taken from these resources is also available in our Bioscience ImageBank.

Dr Helen Chatterjee is a Senior Lecturer in Biology at UCL with research interests in mammal evolution, conservation and biogeography. She is currently Director of Studies for Biological Sciences at UCL and Deputy Director of UCL’s Museums and Collections. She has a long standing interest in the development of resources (real and virtual) to aid the acquisition of knowledge and skills pertaining to organismal biology, including taxonomy, systematics and evolution.

In collaboration with a former Zoology student, Alex Lee, and Mark Carnall (Curator of the Grant Museum of Zoology at UCL) Helen has been developing VERB (Virtual Educational Resource for the Biosciences).

Initially created in Moodle, all of the contents of VERB have been repackaged and deposited into JorumOpen as part of the HEA Centre for Bioscience’s Interactive Laboratory and Fieldwork Manual for the Biosciences. This resource provides a fantastic opportunity for universities across the UK and beyond to access and share material hitherto held within HEIs, affording the chance to make use of VERB and its associated virtual zoology collections.
