Genetic Analysis Resources

Ian Miller - University of Manchester

The Genetic Analysis Scenario-Based Learning Interactive (SBLi) suite is a set of scenarios designed to support an undergraduate course in Genetics. In the scenarios the student plays the role of a genetics researcher, and performs simulated experiments to reinforce concepts taught in lectures.

In Life Sciences at Manchester the eLearning team works alongside academic staff to create teaching materials. Kathy Hentges teaches the second year courses Genetic Analysis and Principles of Developmental Biology. Kathy has provided the direction and learning outcomes to Dan Levin and Kate Breakey to develop these scenarios over a number of years.

Dan and Kate have a background in genetics which was vital for the success of these learning resources and with Dan's technical abilities coupled with Kate's illustrations has made these scenarios attractive to staff / students.

As all the material has been created at Manchester and the IP associated with the resources is unique it was easy to make available under the terms of the OER. In addition to this, the ability to change and modify the scenarios to meet your own learning style is available supported by Manchester and University of Queensland.
