Field Ecology Resources

Ross MacLeod - University of Glasgow

This collection of resources has been designed to supplement lecture and field courses in ecology by providing a level of detail that goes beyond what can be presented in a lecture or learnt at a single field site in the short space of time available on a field course.

If you have any feedback regarding these resources, please let us know using the Comments form at the bottom of the page.

I’m a post-doctoral researcher in the Division of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Glasgow.

My research focuses on biodiversity distribution patterns, developing survey and monitoring methods for tropical forest diversity, conservation and using behavioural risk trade-off theory to understand and predict population responses to environmental and climate change.

All my research is heavily reliant on trained observers carrying out fieldwork so I have developed an interest in how ecology field courses are used to develop field based identification and survey skills. Most of my fieldwork is carried out in the world’s most diverse hot spots, in the tropical Andes and the Amazon basin.

The University of Glasgow and the Division of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology are fortunate in being able to offer their students access to learning opportunities within a wealth of natural environments both locally and more globally.

The resources being released as part of this OER project are intended to share these opportunities by providing a visual experience of environments and ecology field techniques that many biology and ecology students will never have the chance to experience in real life during their courses.
