JorumOpen Cataloguing Guidelines

The JorumOpen repository offers a straightforward cataloguing interface for depositing resources and/or links to resources hosted elsewhere. As a minimum the information we provide has to ensure that our resources are discoverable through search, that the user will be able to understand the scope of the resource and how it might be used in an educational context.

For those of you depositing IMS/SCORM Content Packages, the JorumOpen system should automatically harvest metadata from within the content package itself, reducing your cataloguing time significantly. An advantage of this method is that the metadata will always travel with the content package, rather than existing solely within the repository.

Make sure you take advantage of your browser’s built-in functions, such as form auto-complete, to avoid repetition. It is likely that a number of the resources you catalogue will all have the same Author/Institution, so you can save a lot of time using auto-complete.

Additionally, most modern browsers contain spell-checking options so please make sure these are active (Mozilla Firefox does it automatically).

1. Log in as a Depositor.

2. Under My Account select Deposits and then start a new deposit.

3. Collection

Select HE – Biological Sciences from drop-down list.

4. Initial Questions/File Upload

Select whether you wish to catalogue a link or file(s).

5. Description

Title

This should be the same as on the resource, and if part of a collection, acknowledge that. “Resource Title (1 of 5)”, for example.

Description

Concise, accurate, informative, avoid needless filler. An outline of what the resource contains and how it might be used in an educational context. If applicable include details on software required to run/edit the resource.

Keywords

Ensure all important aspects of the resource are covered here, and be as specific as possible to assist search. Please also remember to include bioukoer and ukoer.

Author, Institution

The author of the resource. There is currently no separate field to add an Institution, so we’re recommending the author’s institution be added in the author field, comma-separated. For example: “Chris Taylor, University of Leeds”. Alternatively, the institution may be added on a separate line as a second author.

Licence Type

Select the relevant Creative Commons licence, ideally Attribution-Non-commercial-Share-Alike [By-NC-SA].

Incomplete records may be saved and returned to at any time using the Save and Exit button. These will be stored in your Deposits area and are not displayed publicly.
