FAQ - Resources

Sadly the UK Centre for Bioscience has now closed and our resources no longer updated. The text below is retained to highlight some of the many services we provided free of charge.

To view each topic section simply click on the appropriate topic heading.

Can you recommend a book, software or a website for a particular area of study?

Book and website reviews are published in Bioscience Education our peer–reviewed, fully searchable journal. Knowledgebase, our online database of learning and teaching resources also contains book, software and some website reviews. A list of useful on-line sites for bioscience educators has also been compiled, as has a resource list for practical and field work and a list of pedagogical resources.

What types of resources are available from the Centre?

The Centre for Bioscience aims to encourage and facilitate the sharing of high quality learning and teaching resources. We have created an A-Z of resources so you can quickly find information for the topic you are interested in. The following are examples that have been produced and are available free of charge:

Publications:

  • Bioscience Education - our peer reviewed journal of learning and teaching in the biosciences.
  • The Bioscience Bulletin - published three times a year the Bulletin contains informal wide-ranging articles related to learning and teaching in the biosciences.
  • Learning Guides - the learning guide series is intended to be an accessible introduction to good learning and teaching practice within the context of competing research and institutional pressures. The guides combine a mix of theory with bioscience examples and case studies.

Resources:

  • Audit Tools - designed to help teachers consider the content and design of a course/programme with respect to a particular issue and where improvements could be made.
  • Bioethics Briefings - intended to help teachers deal with various ethical topics from stem cells to genetically modified crops and xenotransplantation.
  • Knowledgebase - online resource service for tertiary level bioscience teachers.
  • ImageBank - a collection of free, copyright-cleared, bioscience images for educational use.
  • Case Studies - examples of effective learning, teaching and assessment practice written by bioscience teachers. Each case study provides an outline of something that has been tried and found to worked well with students.
  • Short Guides - aim to provide an introduction to various aspects of teaching and learning in the biosciences. The guides complement the material and information available through our website.
