FAQs - EventsThe UK Centre for Bioscience organised and delivered over 100 CPD events for the learning and teaching bioscience community. Sadly the UK Centre for Bioscience has now closed, however, the material on this page has been retained to give an indication of the level of service and we provided and as useful questions for anyone organising an event. The restructured Academy will be offering discipline-specific events but please be aware the new model seems to pass much of the organistion and delivery to the host institution.
On this page we have gathered together some of the more frequently asked questions and their answers. If you need more information than is given, or if you have a query which is not covered on this page, please contact us. To view each topic section simply click on the appropriate topic heading.
What events are you holding this year?Take a look at our events programme, this lists the events being held by the Centre for Bioscience, and other organisations that may be of interest, over the next few months. If you missed an event, or would like to see what our previous events have covered, a report for each event, which often includes presentations from the day and links to related resources, is available from our events report web page. Is there any funding available to attend one of your events? We currently offer travel bursaries of up to £150 for individuals to attend our events. Travel bursaries are advertised at the same time as the event and deadlines are for specific events. In addition to this Academy Scotland also offer funding enabling academic staff in Scottish HEIs to engage with colleagues from other parts of the UK. The funding (£300 maximum) may be used to help colleagues attend Higher Education Academy (including Subject Centres) conferences, network meetings and special interest groups that are being run outside of Scotland. What determines where an event is held?We try to host events across the UK throughout the year in order to make events easily accessible to everyone. If an event is over-subscribed, it might be held again in a different part of the country to increase exposure to the bioscience community. Bioscience Reps and contacts sometimes volunteer to help us host a national event at their institution and where possible we will work with them. How are the event themes determined? We base our events on input from our bioscience community, the themes from the Higher Education Academy, and our own analysis of the teaching and learning practitioners' needs. We are always open to suggestions for future events! At the end of all our events we ask delegates to complete a feedback form, on which you can let us know if you would be interested in any particular event themes, we also have an online form where you can suggest an event. Can I contribute at an event? There are a variety of ways that you can contribute to our events. Most of our presenters are bioscientists just like you. We ask those we know are active and highly successful practitioners in learning and teaching to share their experiences with the broader community at our events. Additionally, many of our events have a Swapshop element where interested event attendees can share how they are approaching the event theme in their own teaching and learning. If you are interested in sharing in a Swapshop session, please let us know when you register for the event! |
