Themed Groups
The Centre for Bioscience has established a number of Special Interest Groups
(SIGs) and Network Groups to encourage discussion and exchange of information
of various learning and teaching issues from a bioscience perspective. Group
members have the opportunity to exchange experiences, identify and develop
good practices that will be both themselves and the wider bioscience community.
Special Interest Groups
Each SIG has a Co-ordinator or Steering Group whose task it is to facilitate
and co-ordinate activities carried out by the Group.
Teaching Ethics to Bioscience Students
Steering Group: Prof. John Bryant (Convenor), University of Exeter; Dr Chris
Willmott, University of Leicester; Dr Andy Bond, University of Westminster
Final Year Project Work in the Biosciences
Co-ordinator: Dr Richard Cowie, School of Biosciences, University of Wales,
Cardiff
Network Groups
Network Groups are united by a common interest in a theme or topic. Within
the group, members communicate via a common e-mail list. As a general rule
focused questions/queries/comments are periodically posted to the list and
members respond as they see fit. In addition, the Centre for Bioscience will
occasionally post to the list to notify members of events, opportunities or
resources that they feel will be of interest to the group.
Biomaths (Numeracy and mathematical literacy)
This list is run by the Centre for Bioscience in conjunction with Dr Vicki
Tariq (University of Central Lancashire). The list is open to anyone with a
concern about the mathematical skills of Bioscience entrants. Vicki has a National
Teaching Fellowship Award in the area of student
numeracy. Therefore, as well as the usual opportunity to share and discuss
ideas, the list will also be used to inform members of activities and opportunities
provided by the work from Vicki's National Teaching Fellowship award. To join
the list send an email message to:
jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk with the text in the body of the message:
subscribe biomaths-ed firstname lastname
Employability
A list for those with an interest in the employability of graduates. To join
the list send an email message to:
jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk with the text in the body of the message:
subscribe employability-ed firstname lastname
Further information and resources are available from the Employability
Section of our website.
Practical work in the Biosciences
This network group covers both fieldwork and laboratory-based practicals.
Further information, resources and practical-based references are available
from the Practical Work Section of our website.
In addition, there is a list for those with an interest in the area. To join
the list send an email message to:
jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk with the text in the body of the message:
subscribe practical-ed firstname lastname
Problem Based Learning
A list for those interested in all aspects of Problem Based Learning. To join
the list send an email message to:
jiscmail@jiscmail.ac.uk with the text in the body of the message:
subscribe pbl-ed firstname lastname
In addition, the Centre has also produced a list of selected pbl resources
