Teaching Aids on Cellular Respiration
The TCA Cycle & Oxidative Phosphorylation
J. MaberDepartment of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
University of Leeds
A package of CAL based teaching aids covering the TCA cycle and
oxidative phosphorylation. Designed for use by first year science
undergraduates to supplement lectures and tutorials in Biochemistry and
related courses. The programs have been developed using the Asymetrix
Toolbook authoring program and includes:
- Interactive problem solving exercise on the TCA Cycle. Unknown
solutions are identified using 'Krebs like' oxygen electrode
experiments. The problem is very challenging and is not intended as a
'teach yourself' package. It is used to reinforce existing knowledge of
the TCA cycle and to show how metabolic poisons can be used to elucidate
biochemical pathways.
- Computer animations illustrating key concepts. These are designed
for use both in lectures and as reference material for private study on
computer clusters.
- 70+ drill questions on the topic presented in simple but attractive
format. Used by undergraduates to learn basic facts and grasp
elementary concepts as preparation for, or revision of, complementary
lecture and tutorial material.
Features
- good example of CAL material that is well integrated with
conventional teaching methods
- excellent graphics and animations
- designed for use by large numbers at an elementary level
