National & University Teaching Fellows

28 July 2011 - Higher Education Academy announces this year's National Teaching Fellowship winners

As well as celebrating the learning and teaching success of our peers, we hope providing the names of National and University Teaching Fellows in one place will enable individuals to identify and make contact with other bioscientists with similar learning and teaching interests and related expertise.

Have you gained recognition from your institution?

Many universities run their own Teaching Fellowship schemes; if you have gained an award from your institution please let us know.

National Teaching Fellows

The Higher Education Academy administers the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme which aims to raise the profile of teaching and learning in higher education and provides a total of £2.5 million funding a year.  There are two separate strands: individual awards and projects.

Individual Awards

The aim of individual awards is to recognise and celebrate individuals who make a significant impact on the student learning experience. As it is a national scheme it provides a focus for schemes run by individual institutions. Each year up to 55 teaching fellowships are awarded with the recipient receiving £10,000 to be used for personal development in teaching and learning. The 2011 National Teaching Fellows have now been announced.

2011 - Congratulations to this year's bioscience recipients!

In 2011 three bioscientists have been recognised with individual awards. Congratulations! to Dr Anthony Hilton (Aston University); Dr Martin Luck (University of Nottingham); and Professor Joanna Verran (Manchester Metropolitan University).

Projects

The project strand of the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme was introduced in 2006/2007 and provides an opportunity for higher education institutions to work with national Teaching Fellows to build on current expertise for their own benefit and that of the wider higher education community. Project teams can bid for funds of up to £200,000 for use over a three year period.

In 2006/2007, the first year projects were available, one of the nine successful project bids, Every Student Counts: Promoting Numeracy and Enhancing Employability, is directed by Bioscientist Vicki Tariq.

A list of projects funded in 2010 is also available.

Individuals Awarded Teaching Fellowships by their University

The following individuals have been identified by us, or have notified us, as having been awarded a Teaching Fellowship by their University in recognition of the outstanding impact their work has had on the student learning experience. Universities often support their fellows by funding teaching and learning projects that the fellows wish to pursue and/or awarding annual honorariums. It must be emphasised that universities are celebrating these people's work and this is not a job title.
