Ed Wood Teaching Award 2010 - winner and runners-up announced!

Photo of the Award finalists, from left to right: Anne Tierney, Graham Scott and Stephen McCleanThe Ed Wood Teaching Award was established in 2008/09 to provide an annual opportunity for bioscience academics to receive national recognition for their outstanding learning and teaching practices. All UK bioscience academics who work in higher education or who teach higher education in a further education establishment are eligible for our Awards.

In 2010 the Award received 10 applications, of which 3 were short listed. Short listed applicants worked with a member of the Centre team to develop a 2 page case study based on: observation of the teaching practice; interviews with the applicant; student questionnaires; and student focus groups. These case studies are available below.

The standard of competition for the Ed Wood Teaching Award 2010 was very high and our judges had a difficult time selecting a winner from our three very deserving candidates. The decision was announced and a presentation to our runners-up and finalists was held at our 2010 Bioscience Representatives' Forum in Cardiff. The finalists also showcased their ideas and reflected on the process of the Award at the Forum and their presentations will be available soon as part of the Forum report.

The Centre extends its congratulations to all three finalists and the overall winner, Graham Scott of the University of Hull, who was presented with his award and received £500 towards future professional development activity.

Awards such as the Ed Wood Teaching Award provide professional recognition and validation but more importantly they provide the impetus to reflect, to discuss with colleagues and to receive and respond to criticism.

The Ed Wood Teaching Award 2009

The inaugural Award in 2009 received 19 applications (find out more about the process for the 2009 Award) , of which 6 were short listed. Short listed applicants worked with a member of the Centre team to develop a 2 page case study based on: observation of the teaching practice; interviews with the applicant; student questionnaires; and student focus groups. These case studies are available below. The Award Finalists also contributed to an article in the Bioscience Bulletin where they reflected on their experience of the Award.

A number of the finalists showcased their ideas at the Science Learning and Teaching Conference 2009 and were presented with a certificate at the conference dinner by Professor Kevan Gartland, Chair of the Centre's Advisory Group and Dean of Life Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University. The Centre would like to extend its congratulations to all six finalists and the overall winner, Mark Huxham of Edinburgh Napier University who was presented with his award and received £500 towards future professional development activity.

Case study: Learning in lectures: transforming teaching through interaction and engagement

The whole process was stimulating, supportive and fun...made me think again about class room dynamics and the practical constraints of large group teaching... Seeing the feedback from my class reminded me how teachers and students are engaged in a collective enterprise that should be based on mutual respect
