Learning through Assessment

Tuesday 8 January 2008

Southampton, CETL:IPPS space, Hartley Library Building, Highfield Campus, University of Southampton.

It is well recognised that the type of assessment that students undergo is a powerful influence on how they learn. However, in the concerted effort to ensure that assessments are rigorous, reliable, cheat-proof and able to cope with ever-increasing student numbers it can be difficult to view assessment as an episode of learning. 'Measurement' views of assessment still persist and the National Student Survey highlighted student dissatisfaction with the feedback they received. This event aims to promote assessment as an integrated part of learning. The day will cover the key aspects of assessment for learning with a focus on feedback/feed forward. As usual there will be opportunities for discussion, reflection on practice and to hear 'real-life' practice from fellow bioscientists. We are very pleased to have Liz McDowell as our keynote speaker. Liz has broad experiences in assessment as both the Director of CETL AfL (Centre for Excellence in Teaching & Learning in Assessment for Learning) and from her research focused on student perspective on assessment and approaches to assessment and feedback.
