Biomathtutor: Where are we and where do we want to go?

Wednesday 12 September 2007

University of Birmingham

Biomathtutor was produced by Dr Vicki Tariq (University of Central Lancashire) with academic colleagues and the EBS Trust with funding support from HEFCE. In 2006 Vicki was awarded an e-Learning Research Grant from the Higher Education Academy to evaluate the impact of blending Biomathtutor with traditional teaching methods to support mathematics learning within the life sciences.

This workshop provided an opportunity for attendees to view the Biomathtutor DVD, and hear from those who contributed to its production (academics and colleagues from the EBS Trust). Outcomes of the Biomathtutor evaluation project were also presented: individuals heard details of how Biomathtutor had been used to support maths learning and what the reactions of students and their tutors had been to the software. The final session of the afternoon involved an open discussion of the direction(s) in which Biomathtutor and other maths e-learning resources might be developed in future.

The pilot version of Biomathtutor is now available through the EBS Trust's website.

For more information on Biomathtutor please contact Dr Vicki Tariq, vtariq@uclan.ac.uk

Details of the evaluation and pilot will be formally published, and will be added here in due course.

Every Student Counts: Promoting Numeracy and Enhancing Employability
The decline in numerical competency amongst undergraduates is of major concern.  This NTFS-funded 3-year project will investigate the curricula requirements and support necessary for enhancing students’ numerical skills within undergraduate programmes, and devise strategies to help students develop and practise the numerical skills required by employers.
